Wheelchair user waits 20 minutes for lift at Tampines Mall, urges able-bodied people to be considerate
A wheelchair user has shared a heartfelt plea for greater awareness and consideration in public spaces, particularly in shopping malls.
Stomper Anonymous, who relies on an electric wheelchair for mobility, shared with Stomp the challenges he faces when trying to use lifts.
He posted a recent photo he took at Tampines Mall of a lift filled with people.
They allegedly did not make way for him despite notices on the floor urging people to give priority to those who need to use the lifts more.
"There have been numerous times when I've had to wait almost 20 minutes for a lift," he said.
"I am okay if there are elderly people or those with prams using the lift but most of the time, I see many able-bodied people using them.
"Nobody wanted to get out to let me in instead."
Unlike able-bodied individuals, wheelchair users often have no alternative but to use the lift.
"For able-bodied people, there are usually two choices to go down," he said. "For us, we only have one."
He hopes members of the public will be more considerate and make space for those with mobility challenges.
"We hope that people who take the lift can give way to those in wheelchairs," he said.
