Vendor fined $2,500 for illegally importing 127kg worth of vegetables
Chan Poh Seng, a licensee of Chye Soon Vegetables Trader, was fined $2,500 on Wednesday (July 8) for illegally importing fresh vegetables.
In December 2019, officers from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) detected 127kg of under-declared fresh vegetables imported from Malaysia. All the illegal consignments were seized.
In Singapore, food imports must meet SFA’s requirements and food safety standards. Any illegally imported food products pose a food safety risk as they are from an unknown source.
"Food can only be imported by licensed importers, and every consignment must be declared and accompanied with a valid import permit," said the SFA in a statement.
Offenders who illegally import fresh fruits and vegetables shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years.
