2 arrested after unlicensed GetGo driver fled crash at Geylang pasar malam that killed 66-year-old woman
Two men have been arrested following a fatal crash at a Geylang night market that killed a 66-year-old woman working at a pasar malam stall.
The accident occurred on July 11 at about 11.45pm at Block 52A Circuit Road, where the woman was reportedly cleaning up at a kueh tutu stall.
The police said in a statement that the 40-year-old driver, who did not have a valid licence or insurance, was behind the wheel of a rental car when it struck the victim.
He did not stop or help the injured woman, but instead allegedly fled the scene.
She was pronounced dead by a Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic at the scene.
Through extensive ground inquiries and CCTV footage, Traffic Police officers arrested the man within 15 hours of the crash.
He is now assisting with investigations for multiple offences, including:
- Dangerous driving causing death
- Driving without a licence
- Using a vehicle without insurance
- Failing to stop after an accident
- Failing to render assistance
A second man, aged 38, was arrested at the scene for allegedly permitting the driver to operate the car despite not having a valid licence or insurance.
He was believed to be the one who rented the vehicle and was seated in the front passenger seat during the incident.
Preliminary findings revealed that the car involved was a black Ssangyong Tivoli from GetGo Carsharing.
In an earlier statement, GetGo said the vehicle had been used by an unauthorised individual in breach of their terms of service.
"This is a severe breach of our terms of service, which are designed to protect our community," GetGo said on July 13. "We are cooperating fully with the police. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of the deceased."
The police reminded motorists to always follow traffic rules and to render assistance in the event of an accident.
"Leaving an accident scene without rendering assistance is a criminal offence," the authorities said, adding that firm action will be taken against those who endanger public safety.
Investigations are ongoing.
