Two 77-year-old men found dead in Punggol and Hougang, daughter lived with one body for days
The police were alerted to two cases of unnatural death in two days.
In both cases, a 77-year-old man was found lying motionless in a flat and was pronounced dead at the scene, police told Stomp.
The police were alerted to the first case at Block 326A Sumang Walk in Punggol on April 9 at 5.05pm after neighbours detected a rotten smell coming from the man's flat.
When officers arrived, the man's decomposing body was found.
One neighbour told Shin Min Daily News the man lived alone and was last seen about a week earlier.
Another neighbour said the man once got so drunk that he passed out in the corridor and the Singapore Civil Defence Force was called. The neighbour added that the man attempted suicide at home at the end of last year.
For the second case at Block 124 Hougang Avenue 1, the police were alerted on April 10 at 5.45am.
Again, neighbours smelled something bad, but for days, they did not think much of it as the deceased lived with his daughter, reported Shin Min Daily News.
Relatives were shocked as the deceased had just visited them for Hari Raya. They said he looked unwell, gasping for breath as he sat hunched over on a sofa with a cane.
"At the time, his daughter said that she had taken her father to see a doctor. We didn't talk much about it because he was not in good condition and didn't want to talk. But his condition was much worse than last year," said a relative.
The daughter is believed to have a history of mental illness and stayed at home with her dead father's body for several days before calling the police.
In response to a Stomp query, the police said that based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected for both cases.
Investigations are ongoing.
