Traffic controller, 66, dies after being run over by road roller: Shocked family wants answers
The family of a traffic controller, who was killed in an accident with a road roller at an SP Group worksite in Joo Chiat on March 3, is desperately seeking answers.
The 66-year-old man was crossing a newly paved road when he was run over by a reversing road roller along Carpmael Road at around 4pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic.
The police said the road-roller operator, a 39-year-old man, was arrested for causing death by a negligent act.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the police are investigating the incident.
Shin Min Daily News identified the deceased as Mr Wang Zhenxi, who is survived by his wife and their four children.
Mr Wang's eldest daughter, who is in her 30s, said: "We were notified only two hours after the accident and were all shocked."
Sobbing, she recounted rushing to the accident site with her family: "We were asked to sit by the roadside and wait for the police to investigate, but till now, we still don't know what happened. We only learnt some details after reading the newspaper."
She also alleged in Shin Min's March 5 report that her family has yet to receive any calls or condolences from the relevant parties.
Ms Wang hopes the authorities can investigate the matter so that she can give her father a proper send-off.
SP Group told The Straits Times that Mo Guan Construction Engineering was carrying out works at its worksite on Carpmael Road, with the services of its sub-contractor Asphalt Specialist Services.
A spokesperson said on March 4: "We were informed by Mo Guan, the main contractor, that an officer from Asphalt was involved in a traffic accident at the site.
"We are saddened by the incident and extend our deepest condolences to the officer's family. We are in touch with Mo Guan to render the necessary support."
