A man was disgusted to see a raw chicken on the floor at Upper Boon Keng Market & Food Centre.

Stomper Revathi said he came across the concerning sight at the Al Hikmah Chicken Rice stall on Nov 12 at 8.32pm.

"It's terrible," said the Stomper, who did not approach the staff or report it to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

However, the stall refuted Revathi's claims and clarified that its staff was cleaning up spillage.

A spokesperson for Al Hikmah Chicken Rice told Stomp on Nov 20: "A plastic bag of chicken accidentally fell from a box near the stall entrance.

"You can see one image showing part of a box and a larger amount of chicken spilled. In the next photo, the staff is seen picking up the fallen chicken, with noticeably less remaining."

The spokesperson said this "clearly indicates the staff was cleaning up a spillage, not deliberately placing chicken on the floor", while noting: "It is also illogical that anyone would intentionally place or prepare raw chicken near the entrance where people walk by."

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on Nov 17 that it is investigating.

"Food safety is a joint responsibility," the agency added.

"While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices. Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained.

"Members of the public who have concerns about food safety practices by food operators should report to SFA via the online feedback form.

"SFA takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices. As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained."

Al Hikmah Chicken Rice said it "fully cooperated with SFA during their checks", adding: "We continue to adhere strictly to SFA and National Environment Agency (NEA) hygiene standards."
