So many bicycles in Tampines void deck that 'residents can't walk through', town council says problem 'not fully resolved'

The number of bicycles parked around a void deck in Tampines has gone out of control, said a resident.

Stomper Dennis is fed up with bikes hogging the space in the void deck of Block 803 Tampines Avenue 4.

He said: "I wonder if bicycles and e-bikes are allowed to park in Housing Board void decks.

"Residents cannot even walk through, meet for chit-chat, bring their kids down for a walk or hold any communal events."

He had reported the issue to Tampines Town Council in June 2023.

"Back then, there were only a handful of bicycles parked indiscriminately," said the resident, who shared photos of the current situation.

"As of May 27, the number of bicycles has snowballed as the pictures show."

Dennis has lost hope that the situation will improve.

"I think the town council has probably given up trying to solve the issue," said the Stomper.

"This void deck will eventually be a dumping ground for all sorts of bicycles."

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Tampines Town Council confirmed they are aware of the problem and the inconvenience it has caused to residents.

"The issue tends to intensify on weekdays, likely due to the block's proximity to Tampines West MRT Station, which attracts heavy commuter traffic," said the spokesperson.

"To help manage the situation, we have marked designated bicycle parking zones (yellow boxes) at the void deck and conducted regular housekeeping to keep common areas safe and accessible.

"We also continue to remind cyclists to use the ample open-air bicycle racks provided by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) beside the MRT station.

"That said, we recognise these efforts have not fully resolved the problem.

"We are therefore working with LTA to explore additional solutions - including the possibility of increasing sheltered bicycle parking options closer to the MRT station."

The spokesperson added that the town council remains committed to improving the environment for both residents and commuters, and will continue to monitor and manage the situation.
