Tampines restaurant Abu Mubarak fined $4,700 after 12 people suffer gastroenteritis
A restaurant in Tampines was fined $4,700 on July 10 after 12 people fell ill from consuming its food.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) and Singapore Food Agency (SFA) had received reports of gastroenteritis involving the food establishment located at 300 Tampines Avenue 5 in April 2023.
Two people were hospitalised and subsequently discharged.
MOH and SFA conducted a joint investigation at the licensee's premises and found multiple food safety lapses. They include cockroach infestation at the food preparation area and possession of unclean food for sale.
SFA said in a news release that food safety is a joint responsibility as food can be contaminated anywhere along the food chain.
It added: "While SFA continues to be vigilant and works to ensure regulatory measures are in place and properly enforced, the industry and consumers must also play their part."
All food operators should ensure their premises are clean and well maintained, as well as adhere to proper food hygiene and food safety requirements.
SFA said it will not hesitate to take enforcement action against food operators found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act.
Offenders may face a fine of up to $2,000. In the case of a continuing offence, they are liable to a further fine not exceeding $100 for every day or part thereof during which the offence continues after conviction.
Members of the public who come across poor hygiene practices or illegal activities in food establishments are advised not to patronise them and provide feedback via SFA's online feedback form with details for follow-up investigations.
