A stranger's unexpected gesture left a couple filled with warmth and gratitude on the first day of the Lunar New Year.

Stomper Rosmah and her husband, who are both in their 60s, had visited Al-Ameen Eating Corner in Marsiling on Jan 29, at around 8.25am.

Rosmah recounted: "We were getting breakfast and the eatery was packed with diners. We saw this Chinese guy eating alone and approached him to ask whether we could share seats.

"Without hesitation, he smiled and replied, 'Sure, can.' I told him to please don't mind us and to take his time to eat.

"Before he left the eatery, he came to us and said, 'Auntie, I paid for you already.'

"We were shocked and could not thank him enough. I just told him, 'Thank you, thank you so much.'"

Rosmah's bill came up to $28.90.

She said the man left so hurriedly after passing her the receipt that she did not manage to thank him properly.

"I believe he has work to do as he did not even finish his cup of tea. I couldn't even thank him properly, that's why I'm writing to Stomp," Rosmah added.

"I just want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts. We really appreciate his warm gesture.

"To this guy, we would like to wish him a Happy New Year. May the lunar new year bring him prosperity, progress, health and lots of happiness. Thank you so much.

"My husband and I are so touched. Regardless of race or religion, this is Singapore at the end of the day. We are all one Singapore."
