What started as a friendly pickleball game nearly turned into a disaster when a stone was thrown down a Telok Blangah condominium, narrowly missing one of the players.

The incident occurred around 6pm on June 11, at The Interlace on Depot Road, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Mr Wang Qinghua, 62, told reporters that he and his friends had booked the court from 6pm to 8pm.

When they arrived, about 12 children aged six to 12 were already there playing basketball and cricket. The group signalled to the children to leave before they began their game.

Shortly after the match began, someone hurled a stone down the condo.

"It was about the size of an adult's palm," said Mr Wang. "Had it hit someone, the consequences would have been dire."

Mr Wang, who is not a resident at The Interlace, said he had been invited to play by Mr Chen, a resident he befriended three months ago.

The group had made a proper booking with the management to use the public court, a space designated for sports and recreational activities.

Despite the scare, the group continued playing until 8pm. A police report was filed the next day after they reflected on the seriousness of the incident.

When contacted, the police confirmed that a report had been made and that they were looking into the matter.

Mr Wang said the stone is believed to have been thrown from a corridor on the fourth or fifth floor of the building. When the group looked up, they spotted four or five children.

"The player who almost got struck shouted, 'We can see you!'" he said. "But the person still threw two pebbles."

The pickleball group, which started with just eight players, has grown to 14 members, including six residents of the condo.

They now play three times a week: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sessions typically run from 6pm to 9pm, except on Thursdays when they play from 8pm to 10pm.
