Feb 25 will always be a memorable day for Stomper Mathan, who saw a pangolin for the first time in his life.

He spotted the cute little creature under the Eco-Link @ BKE bridge at around 5am and shared a video with Stomp.

Mathan said: "I found a pangolin walking leisurely under the bridge. Maybe it was looking for food.

"I was very excited to experience this as it rarely happens, plus this is the first time I have seen a pangolin in my life."

The Sunda pangolin is listed as critically endangered in the Singapore Red Data Book 2024.

In Singapore, they face the greatest threat from roadkill, said the National Parks Board (NParks). Nocturnal and slow-moving, pangolins are often injured or killed by vehicles when they stray off too far from the forested areas onto roads.

Due to high demand for their meat and scales, pangolins are believed to be the most trafficked non-human mammal in the world.

What should I do when I encounter a pangolin?

  • Do not be alarmed. These animals are shy and will not attack humans.
  • Do not touch, chase or corner them, as they will be frightened from your approach. You are advised to leave them alone.
  • Observe them. It is not very often that you will get to see a live pangolin.
  • If you see a pangolin that is in distress or requires rescue, please contact NParks at 1800-476-1600 for assistance.
