Stomper baffled by row of plastic bottles outside MacPherson market stalls
A man was chuffed by a curious sight at MacPherson Market and Food Centre on March 24: bottles of water placed along multiple storefronts.
Stomper Don said he was at the hawker centre for lunch when he noticed that some stalls – specifically those at Block 89 Circuit Road – had multiple bottles of water lined up at their storefronts.
“Maybe to scare away cats or birds?” the Stomper suggested.
Don clarified that he did not stay to ask anyone what the plastic bottles were meant for, but shared it with Stomp as he felt “it might be a tip others can learn”.
In photos shared with Stomp, at least 15 bottles of clear liquid – of various volumes – can be seen in front of closed stalls. One of these shops is Gain Wish Essential Oil, which touts “skin brightening oil” on its signboard.
While the exact reason for the bottles remains unclear, such practices may be linked to Chinese geomancy, or feng shui.
According to Way Fengshui Group, a local feng shui consultancy that opened in 1984, water represents wealth in Chinese culture.
“In feng shui, we often leverage the Water element to bring forth opportunities as well as aid in boosting wealth luck,” the group’s website reads.
