Smoke seen billowing from SMRT bus on PIE after its engine catches fire
A bus caught on fire along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards Tuas on Oct 5.
Stomper Anonymous shared a video showing smoke billowing from the back of an SMRT bus that had pulled over to the side of the highway near the East Coast Parkway (ECP) exit at about 10.31pm.
The video shows smoke emerging from the vehicle's engine compartment as traffic passes by.
In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 10.30pm.
The fire, which involved the bus's engine compartment, had already burnt itself out before firefighters arrived, an SCDF spokesperson said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Responding to Stomp's queries, SMRT said that the bus, operating on Service 110, had been travelling along the PIE when smoke was emitted from its engine compartment.
The bus captain promptly stopped the vehicle at a safe location, alerted SMRT's Bus Operations Control Centre and safely transferred all 40 passengers onboard to the next bus so they could continue their journeys.
SMRT added that the smoke was extinguished by the Automated Fire Extinguisher System installed on its buses. The affected bus has since been towed back to the depot for further investigation.
"Safety is our top priority," said Mr Vincent Gay, SMRT Buses' Deputy Managing Director, who thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
