A Shopee user bought FairPrice vouchers from the e-commerce platform and was surprised to discover that a voucher was used in Thomson Plaza even though he had not been there for years.

Stomper Yk said that more than half of the vouchers could not be used.

"Despite the vouchers saying I still had credit left, when I applied them on the merchant's website, it gave an error message," explained the Stomper.

"Around 10 of the FairPrice vouchers bought from the Shopee seller were invalid. Some of the vouchers were already stored by other people.

"I could even see that my voucher code was being used at Thomson Plaza on April 8 when I hadn't even gone there for more than a few years.

"When we contacted Shopee, they told us to look for the seller as he was the one who issued the voucher codes. This was really very frustrating for us.

"The seller's account had already been frozen by Shopee. Yet Shopee asked me to chat with the seller."

Shopee disputed this.

Stomp understands that the Stomper was advised to submit a formal report through the in-app process to ensure proper internal escalation, particularly when the seller is no longer active.

The Stomper said he wanted to share his experience to alert the public that even on Shopee, you could be scammed by a voucher seller.

"People might want to think twice before buying vouchers as the savings of 5 per cent might cause you so much trouble," said the Stomper.

In response to a Stomp query, a Shopee spokesperson said the sale of invalid or misrepresented vouchers is prohibited on the platform.

"In this case, the seller was permanently suspended in February 2025 following an internal investigation that identified policy violations. All affected orders reported to Shopee have been promptly refunded," said the spokesperson.

"Shopee employs a combination of automated detection tools and manual review processes to monitor seller behaviour and take timely action against suspicious activity.

"We also encourage users to report questionable listings through the in-app 'Report this Product' feature. These reports support our ongoing efforts to uphold a fair and secure shopping environment for everyone on our platform."
