A cleaning robot at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) caught fire while being charged on July 8.

SGH said in a Facebook post that the fire alarm was activated in Ward 76 at about 7pm.

The fire triggered a sprinkler and SGH’s response team, in accordance with the hospital's fire safety plan.

SGH added: "Our fire warden went on site and the fire was already extinguished.

"As a precaution, patients in Ward 76 were temporarily moved to other ward areas in view of the smoke. We are reassured that none of the patients, visitors or staff sustained any injuries of any kind."

According to SGH, most patients had returned to the ward by 9pm.

The hospital said: "Patient care remains uninterrupted, with contingency plans in place to accommodate any temporary disruptions.

"We apologise for any anxiety or inconvenience caused."

Stomper Anonymous said patients were "kept waiting" for at least an hour since 7pm, adding: "I saw a fire warden at Block 6. The scene cleared at around 8pm.

"When entry was allowed again, a crowd rushed to enter as usual. I think the hospital could have done better if they had assigned more staff to control the crowd and allow patients to enter and return to their rooms first.

"Some patients happened to have gone down for a walk and were stuck downstairs for more then an hour."
