School security guard has to seek shelter at nearby serviced apartment guardhouse in downpour
It was pouring.
Remember when it rained so heavily on Oct 14 that national water agency PUB issued flood risk warnings for 15 locations around Singapore?
That was also the morning when Stomper Moo spotted a security officer from a school having to seek shelter from the elements at the nearby guardhouse of a serviced apartment complex in Boon Lay.
"As you know, we faced torrential rain on Monday morning," said the Stomper, who was on his way to work.
"It was very disheartening to see our low-wage workers having to face such adverse working conditions. This is not the 1800s when slavery was still thriving.
"As the guardhouse did not belong to the school, he had no choice but to use whatever little shelter that was available to shield himself from the rain. It’s hardly enough to provide adequate shelter. Imagine having to start your day of work soaked to the skin.
"The rain was so heavy that even using an umbrella was useless to shield against the downpour."
The security guard's plight raised several questions for the Stomper.
"My concern is that, is this still a prevalent condition in all our schools islandwide?" he asked.
"We’re already widely known worldwide as one of the richest and most progressive countries in the world, and yet this progression seems to be taking a step back with issues like this?
"Would it break the bank in order to provide a proper shelter, a plastic chair or stool, a simple fan?
"While we pour our nation’s wealth into providing our next generation with a world-class education, let us also not forget the sacrifices that these old uncles and aunties are making to keep our future safe and secure.
"The school workers, cleaners, security, gardeners also must be appreciated. These workers also need to have a safe and secure working environment.
"That’s what you call progressive."
