Scheduled visa services at US Embassy will continue 'as situation permits' during govt shutdown
Scheduled passport and visa services at the US Embassy in Singapore will continue "as the situation permits" during the US government shutdown.
The US Embassy also posted on its social media on Oct 1 at 3.25pm that because of the "lapse in appropriations", its social media will not be updated regularly except for urgent safety and security information until full operations resume.
It was the first US federal government shutdown since 2019 when parts of the government were shuttered for 35 days in a stand-off between congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump over his demand to fund a wall at the southern border, reported the New York Times.
This time, the dispute is over Democrats' demand that the president agree to extend expiring healthcare subsidies and restore Medicaid cuts enacted over the summer as part of Mr Trump's marquee tax cut and domestic policy law.
