Residents of Woodgrove Ascent, a Built-To-Order (BTO) project that is less than a year old, have been facing a huge buzzkill: an influx in flies and mosquitoes.

Stomper Jason said he and other occupants of the newly constructed BTO – which started welcoming residents last August – have noticed many pests flying about the past two to three weeks.

Discussions in the residents’ Telegram group chat indicate two problems: choking at rubbish collection points and trash being dumped in common areas.

Jason claimed to have called Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council (MYTTC), which oversees the area, at least three times to report the issue.

“Every day, I have to clean the flies and mosquitoes,” said the frustrated Stomper.

He showed Stomp several photos of electric insect killers and fly traps full of tiny flies, some of which were sent to him by his neighbours.

A message sent in the group chat also suggested that more than one resident had shared feedback with the town council.

One resident claimed to have been told by the town council that it would be “rectifying” the choking problem block by block, and that the entire process would take a few weeks.

Incorrect disposal of refuse led to waste buildup: Town council

A spokesperson from Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council (MYTTC) told Stomp on March 26 that the town council has investigated the problem.

“We found that renovation debris, food waste, and loose refuse were disposed of incorrectly through this (recycling) hopper, leading to waste buildup that attracts pests,” said the spokesperson.

MYTTC employees have cleared the affected recycling hoppers, conducted additional misting to control pests and temporarily sealed the impacted recycling hopper for thorough cleaning. The spokesperson clarified that other recycling blue bin points remain available for residents’ use.

While it has placed notices on maintaining hygiene, the town council reminded residents and renovation contractors to:

  • Dispose of renovation debris only at designated areas (never in recycling hoppers)
  • Bag food waste and general refuse securely before disposal
  • Use the correct bins and disposal point
