Resident shows off 'gardens by the longkang' after assuring town council he will keep corridor clear
A Woodlands resident has transformed his Housing Block (HDB) corridor into a mini garden, sparking concerns among netizens.
TikTok user Michael Lim shared a video of his 'corridor garden' at Woodlands Street 83, in which he introduced himself and took viewers on a virtual tour.
He can be heard saying, "Wah... beautiful right?" and "This is nature" while showing off his various plants such as apple trees and orchids.
"It's blooming today. There are a lot of flowers. Apples... there should be 10 of them," said Lim about his apple plant.
The corridor had also been adorned with Chinese New Year lanterns and decorations, along with an artificial grass patch.
Lim ended his video by saying, "Can? Give me a like."
The video has garnered over 260,000 views and more than 900 comments, many of which are negative.
Netizens said they were thankful that they did not have neighbours like Lim, while several wondered how this was allowed.
A few took interest in Lim's apple trees, asking if they were real and whether they could be planted in Singapore.
One user called the space "garden by the long kang" in reference to local tourist attraction Gardens by the Bay.
In response to a Stomp query, Sembawang Town Council said: "We have been engaging the resident of the mentioned unit on few occasions, and he has assured us of his commitment to maintaining the plants along the corridor and ensuring a 1.2-metre clearance.
"Regarding the current video he posted, we have now revisited the unit and reminded him of the necessity of having a clear corridor. He has confirmed his readiness to do so."
The town council said it will continue to monitor the situation closely. It will also visit the unit to assess the situation and engage with the resident if any further action is required.
