A 23-year-old man was arrested for loanshark harassment on June 8.

The police said they were alerted to the case at a residential unit along Bukit Batok East Avenue 3 on June 8 at about 2.45am. The main gate of the flat was splashed with red paint, and a debtor's note was left outside the unit.

Officers used images from police cameras to establish the man's identity, and he was arrested on the same day.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was allegedly involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment reported in the vicinity of Tah Ching Road and Bendemeer Road.

He will be charged in court on June 10 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine of between $5,000 and $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes.

The police said they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities and advised the public to stay away from loansharks, and not work with or assist them in any way.

Call the police at 999 if you suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
