Rats have been running rampant at Block 165 Stirling Road in Queenstown.

A resident is blaming cleaners for not doing their job well, but the town council said it is caused by improper disposal of rubbish.

Stomper A shared photos of the rodents on a dustbin at midnight on June 26 and said: "Rats!!! There were more than 10 of them. HDB estates are not the same anymore."

The ground around the dustbin can also be seen littered with trash.

A, who provided feedback to Tanjong Pagar Town Council, added: "This happens almost every morning 😤. The cleaners clear the bin but not the floor?"

In response to a Stomp query, a spokeswoman for the town council said: "The standing bin located under the void deck of the block serves as a common disposal point frequently used by residents. To promote hygiene and ease of use, the bin is equipped with a cover and foot pedal.

"Despite these provisions, we have observed ongoing instances of improper disposal. In response, the town council has placed advisory notices to remind residents of appropriate disposal practices. Currently, our conservancy workers clear the bin twice daily, with the final round at 7pm.

"While regular rodent control and estate cleaning are in place, it is important to note that improper disposal of food waste significantly contributes to rodent activity in the area."

Tanjong Pagar Town Council will also implement additional measures to further address the situation.

These include introducing a third round of bin clearing by 9pm daily and installing a surveillance camera to deter inappropriate disposal behavior.

The spokeswoman said: "We also seek the cooperation of all residents in keeping the estate clean and hygienic for everyone's benefit."

Stomper A said the area "looks clean recently", but added: "Not sure how long it will last... Will keep an eye on it."
