‘Rather not display’: Stomper concerned over damaged S’pore flag in Potong Pasir
A badly damaged Singapore flag has prompted a member of the public to remind others to be mindful when displaying the National Flag.
Stomper Steven Yong spotted the flag at around 4pm on Aug 16 while he was parking his car at Tai Thong Crescent.
In a short video sent to Stomp, more than half of the flag appears to be badly damaged, leaving only a small strip of red and white fabric visible.
Steven described the sight as “disrespectful to my country”.
He shared what he saw to encourage others to be mindful of the condition of Singapore’s National Flag when displaying it.
“Rather not display than to display a torn flag,” he said, adding that he feels worn-out flags should be discarded properly.
The sighting comes amid several recent reports by other Stompers about Singapore flags being displayed improperly.
On Aug 20, Stomp reported on flags being hung together with underwear and another flag that was covered by a carpet.
In late July, a faded, torn and tattered Singapore flag was also spotted at Block 178B Hougang Street 12.
According to National Heritage Board (NHB) guidelines, the National Flag should:
- Be cleaned when dirty and replaced if faded or torn.
- Not be hung out to dry outdoors together with other laundry.
- Be properly disposed of if damaged or worn-out by packing it into a sealed black trash bag, and not left visible in the dustbins.
