A little deer made a rare appearance at Central Catchment Nature Reserve on July 8.

Stomper Patrick told Stomp that his wife chanced upon the endangered lesser mousedeer (Tragulus kanchil) on her stroll at the Mandai T15 Trail in the reserve at about 11.30am.

In a video sent by the Stomper, the deer can be seen emerging from the forest, scavenging for food.

"She was very surprised to see the mousedeer as generally, they are elusive creatures," he said.

According to the National Parks Board (NParks) website, the lesser mousedeer is native to Singapore and is one of the smallest known hoofed animals in the world.

The species was classified as critically endangered locally, but in a 2021 study funded by NParks, its population was found to have increased fourfold and it is now listed as endangered.
