A cat that was trapped in a car engine was rescued after seven hours with the help of the Cat Welfare Society and a tow truck.

Private-hire driver Zhuo, 51, told Lianhe Zaobao that at about 9.15am on Feb 17, he heard a cat meowing in the car while driving.

"I vaguely heard a cat's meow in the car but when I saw the passenger in the back seat browsing his phone, I assumed the sound came from his phone," he said.

Mr Zhuo didn't think much of it at the time but at around 10:45am, he and his friend heard the cat's meow again in the car.

"We opened the hood and saw a black and white kitten hiding inside the engine. No matter how we called out, it wouldn't come out."

Mr Zhuo went to a nearby store to buy cat food to lure it out but was unsuccessful, while his friend, who happened to be a member of Cat Welfare Society, posted a plea on the group's Facebook page.

"Many netizens left us messages to give us advice, telling us not to disturb it and wait for someone to come and deal with it."

Ms Wang, 52, rushed to the scene after she saw the post and was later joined by a few other members of the group.

They called for a tow truck, which lifted the car with a jack to enable the group to gently remove the cat. The rescue was completed at about 5pm.

Mr Zhuo shared that the kitten was shaking and crying after it came out, later handing it over to Ms Wang.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the towing cost a total of $80, which was shared equally by members of the Society.

Ms Wang shared that the rescued cat appeared to be only four or five weeks old.

"I will take it to the clinic for a check-up and then put it up for adoption."
