Once jailed for attacking cops, twin brothers now charged for stabbing boy and man in Rochor brawl
They were caned and jailed for "one of the worst attacks on police officers" a few years ago.
Twin brothers Muhammad Fiqkri Jaffri and Muhammad Farhan Jaffri, 31, were back in court on Sept 10.
Along with Muhammad Nuraqib Minhat and Muhammad Farzdhirman Yusman, both 32, the siblings were charged with rioting armed with deadly weapon after a brawl outside a Rochor pub on Sept 7.
The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and caning.
The police said they were alerted at about 4.15am to a fight at Rochor Canal Road where the four men had purportedly attacked a 16-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man following a dispute.
The teen had stab wounds to his arm while the other victim had injuries on his back. Both were conscious when taken to the hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two were known to their assailants.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV and police cameras, officers from Central Police Division and Criminal Investigation Department established the identities of the four men and arrested them on Sept 8.
Two of the men, Fiqkri and Nuraqib, are also accused of committing the offence while they were under remission orders, reported The Straits Times.
Nuraqib was released from prison in June 2023, and was supposed to keep out of trouble from June 10 that year to Sept 14, 2025.
Fiqkri is under a remission order from July 19, 2025, to Oct 7, 2026, after his earlier release from prison.
He had previously been sentenced to 4½ years' jail and six strokes of the cane on May 23, 2022, after pleading guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant, and one count each of vandalism, criminal intimidation and being a member of a secret society.
A year earlier, his brother, Farhan, was sentenced to 33 months and four weeks' jail, three strokes of the cane, and a fine of $3,500.
On Feb 23, 2020, the brothers were sharing a bottle of whisky in their home when Farhan's wife returned and the couple got into an argument.
Husband and wife went to the void deck to continue the argument, and a member of the public called the police.
Four officers arrived at Block 755 Jurong West Street 74 at around 4am.
When Staff Sergeant Tity Sumarni Abd Ghani asked the couple if they were all right, Farhan hurled vulgarities at the policewoman.
Fiqkri heard Farhan's shouts and went to the void deck.
Fiqkri approached the police officers aggressively and demanded to know what was wrong. He told Farhan and his wife to go up to the flat while gesturing aggressively at the police officers and telling them to shut up.
Farhan again hurled vulgarities at Staff Sgt Sumarni before leaving but returned minutes later. He then told Fiqkri that he did not like the face of a policeman, Sergeant Chong Jia Wei.
Fiqkri asked Farhan repeatedly if he wanted Fiqkri to "shoot" Sgt Chong as he held up a fist. By "shoot", he meant punch Sgt Chong.
Both brothers then punched and kicked the policeman on the face and body. Sgt Chong later managed to pin Fiqkri to the ground.
Two other officers restrained Farhan while Staff Sgt Sumarni struck Fiqkri with her baton. Fiqkri taunted the police woman, telling her he was a secret society member.
Two more officers, including Sgt Chen Jian Da, arrived and Fiqkri was arrested. Despite being handcuffed, he headbutted Sgt Chen.
The two injured officers were taken to hospital. Sgt Chong spent two days in a neurosurgery ward and was given 29 days of hospitalisation leave while Sgt Chen was given five days of outpatient sick leave for a fractured nasal bone.
The prosecution called the assault one of the worst attacks against police officers to date.
