Police Coast Guard chase down sampan off Pulau Sarimbun, arrest 3 Malaysians for illegal entry

Three Malaysian men were arrested by the Police Coast Guard for illegal entry into Singapore territorial waters on April 18.

The coast guard were patrolling along the waters near Pulau Sarimbun at about 2.05pm when officers sighted an unidentified sampan.

As the coast guard vessel closed in to check on the sampan, it sped off towards Malaysia. During the pursuit, the sampan made dangerous manoeuvres and collided with the coast guard vessel twice before it was stopped.

Two men from the sampan fell overboard during the manoeuvres but managed to climb back onto the sampan.

A coast guard officer sustained minor injuries during the pursuit, which took place entirely within Singapore territorial waters.

All three men on board the sampan, aged between 28 and 47, were arrested for the offence of illegal entry.

The 28-year-old boatman will be investigated for additional offences of rash navigation and failure to comply with a lawful order to stop. The sampan was seized.

Police investigations are ongoing.
