A fire broke out in the living room of a 12th-floor unit at Block 63 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh in the early hours of Aug 22.

Three people were taken to hospital and about 50 residents were evacuated.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook statement that it was alerted to the fire at about 2.30am.

"Upon arrival, the living room of a twelve-floor unit was on fire," SCDF said.

"SCDF conducted forcible entry into the unit and extinguished the fire with a water jet."

The fire was reportedly confined to the living room.

"During the firefighting operation, firefighters rescued a person from the kitchen," the statement said.

The individual was assessed for smoke inhalation and minor burn injuries and was taken conscious to Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

Two other people from neighbouring units were also taken to hospital, one to SGH for breathlessness and another to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for an injured ankle.

About 50 residents from the block were evacuated by SCDF and police officers as a precaution.

Preliminary investigations found that the fire had involved a Personal Mobility Aid (PMA) in the living room.

SCDF advised members of the public not to leave batteries or devices charging for prolonged periods or leaving the batteries to charge unattended overnight.

It also warned against purchasing or using non-original batteries.

For more fire safety tips on active mobility devices, SCDF directed the public to its online advisory.
