Lawrence Wong first S'pore PM to share his Spotify Wrapped, has gay icons among his top 3 artists

No Taylor Swift?

He is the first Singapore Prime Minister to share his Spotify Wrapped and it's pretty much what you'd expect the Spotify Wrapped of a man who's turning 52 on Dec 18 to look like, yet also surprising.

PM Lawrence Wong's top artists for 2024 were no one under 50 years old.

But even his No. 1 artist, US singer Roy Orbison, seemed a little before the Prime Minister's time.

Orbison had his biggest hits, such as Oh Pretty Woman, Only The Lonely and Crying, in the early 1960s, long before PM Wong was born in 1972.

But the Big O did make a brief comeback in the late 1980s when he joined the supergroup, Travelling Wilburys, before his sudden passing from a heart attack in 1988 at age 52.

The next two names on PM Wong's list posted on Dec 11 are British gay icons Erasure and Elton John.

Synth pop duo Erasure, consisting of Vince Clarke, 64, and Andy Bell, 60, had hits such as Sometimes, A Little Respect and Always from the mid-80s to early 90s.

Tiny Dancer singer John, 77, recently revealed that he is losing his eyesight after retiring from touring following a legendary pop career spanning all the way back to the 1970s.

As an indication of how "uncle" PM Wong's Spotify Wrapped is, the youngest artists on the list, Oasis and Soul Asylum, had their heyday in the mid-1990s.

Noel Gallagher, 57, and brother Liam, 52, of Britpop heroes Oasis recently announced a reunion and will tour in 2025.

US alternative band Soul Asylum's biggest hit was 1993's Runaway Train, written by frontman Dave Pirner, now 60.

PM Wong said about his Spotify Wrapped: "A change from my usual playlist. Enjoying some variety this time round!"

One Facebook user commented: "The 21st century just called. It's asking for a refresh."

According to Spotify, its top five most streamed artists globally in 2024 are:

  1. Taylor Swift
  2. The Weeknd
  3. Bad Bunny
  4. Drake
  5. Billie Eilish

They're all under 50 and thus did not make it onto PM Wong's Wrapped.
