A video showing two power-assisted bicycles (PABs) in the middle of the road - their riders and one pillion rider without helmets - has triggered netizens, with many demanding police action.

The two PABs are seen riding side by side, holding up traffic on the second lane from the left.

The video, apparently taken in Geylang and shared on Facebook page SGVirality on Oct 6, had 66,000 views, 360 reactions and 90 comments at press time.

Many commenters slammed the lack of enforcement of existing laws, which require PAB riders to wear helmets and have visible registration plates - neither of which can be seen in the video.

PABs must be approved by the Land Transport Authority - the technical requirements include having a maximum weight of 20kg and a maximum speed of 25 kmh. Riders also need to sit for a theory test and be at least 16 years old.

"Need enforcement," said one Facebook user.

"Please catch and stop all this nonsense especially at night," said another.

One user felt that the actions of the PAB riders made a mockery of law-abiding road users. "The value of our hard-earned licences are nothing when these people who don't need licenses, insurances and road taxes are still happily on the road breaking traffic rules and endangering the lives of the public on walkways and pavements every now and then."

While the video is subtitled, "Every night in Geylang", netizens pointed out that such riders who flout the traffic laws are everywhere.

One claimed that the high cost of Certificates of Entitlement (COEs) were the cause of such errant riders. "Actually the clever ones," commented another.

"Look at all of you paying COE and high parking fees!"
