Orchard Towers car fire: Woman thought 'entire building would be destroyed', concerned about church there
A fire broke out at Orchard Towers on the night of Feb 6, causing one woman to be concerned about a church in the building.
Fortunately, it was a car fire and no one was injured.
Stomper Elaine shared videos of the flames in the second-floor carpark of the building and firefighters at the scene. The videos were taken by her son, who owns a restaurant in another building nearby.
"He was closing up when he saw the fire and sent the videos to me," said Elaine.
"It looked really bad in the video, but later, my son said the fire was out already. I thought the entire building would be destroyed, and I thought of the church that has its worship centre there."
Cornerstone Community Church had bought 19,000 sq ft of the fourth floor of Orchard Towers for about $54 million in 2025. The space used to house the Top Ten and Crazy Horse clubs.
A dedication ceremony marked the official opening of the church on Jan 16, although Sunday services had started earlier on Dec 14.
Once known for its risque clubs and massage parlours, Orchard Towers has been undergoing a transformation after the Government stopped renewing public entertainment licenses in 2022.
The girlie bars have moved out of the building nicknamed "Four Floors of Whores". Some new businesses moved in, but there are many empty shop spaces, reported The Straits Times in January.
In response to a Stomp query, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 1 Claymore Drive on Feb 6 at about 10.40pm.
The fire involved a car and was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet and a fire blanket.
A video posted on Facebook showed smoke covering the road next to Orchard Towers.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
