The removal of a beloved tree from Block 80 Marine Parade Central has particularly affected one resident.

Stomper Cuvier shared the news about the removal of an Angsana tree beside a coffee shop on May 2.

A photo shows the large stump of the tree cordoned off by tape and traffic cones.

Cuvier also shared a poster put up by the Marine Parade Town Council revealing the reason why the tree was taken down.

"This decision was made following a comprehensive assessment by our Arborist, who identified that the tree poses a potential hazard due to its smoldering and decaying condition, which increases the risk of it falling," the poster said.

"The smoldering was caused by a discarded lighted cigarette butt, which had been irresponsibly thrown into the hollow of the Angsana tree.

"To prevent any possible accidents or damages within our estate, it was decided that removal is necessary."

National Parks Board designates the Angsana as an "iconic tree commonly cultivated along the roads of Singapore."

Its trunk can grow up to two metres in diameter.

"I feel saddened, the tree will be missed," Cuvier said.
