Note left at Haig Road flat says resident owes $20,000, police arrest 18-year-old suspect
An 18-year-old suspect was arrested for loanshark harassment in Haig Road.
The police were alerted to the case on Aug 11 at about 4.10pm after a debtor's note was placed on the gate of a flat.
The note said the resident owed $20,000.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the teenager and arrested him within two hours.
One mobile phone, three bicycle locks and two debtor notes were seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in other cases of loanshark harassment.
He was to be charged in court on Aug 13 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.
For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes.
The police added: "Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call 999 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities."
