Note left at gate threatens to burn down Hougang flat, man arrested for loanshark harassment
A 50-year-old man was arrested for loanshark harassment 13 days after a debtor’s note was found on the gate outside a Hougang flat.
The police were alerted to the case at the Hougang Street 51 flat on June 21 at about 2.00pm.
The note said: "Call me now. Next time I'll burn your house down."
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on July 4.
A writing pad, a red marker and a mobile phone were seized as a case exhibits.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment.
The man was charged in court on July 6 under the Moneylenders Act.
For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
