Newton condo sign warns delivery partners of $300 fine for using passenger lifts, management says it's an 'error'
A GrabFood delivery partner was about to use a lift at a condo in Newton on July 13, when he noticed a sign stating that contractors and delivery partners were not allowed to use passenger lifts.
Stomper Hi shared with Stomp a photo of the notice he found put up beside the lifts in Amaryllis Ville condominium.
The sign reads: "Contractors & Delivery must use this lift only. Do NOT use passenger lifts. CCTV in use. Fine: $300. By order of MCST 2887."
Beneath it, a second sign informs residents of ongoing lift upgrading works in the estate.
The Stomper said the sign was "pure discrimination by the condo".
"The lift was not coming down, yet I had to wait to avoid a $300 fine," he said. "This is the first time I've seen a fine for someone using the wrong lift."
In response to a Stomp query, Amaryllis Ville's management said: "Our estate is currently undergoing major lift upgrading works, which has resulted in certain limitations on lift usage. One out of three lifts per block are shut down for upgrading. This is necessary to enhance the overall functionality and safety of our facilities.
"It is common practice among condominiums to have house rules and by-laws that restrict delivery and moving activities to specific lifts. This is done to ensure that necessary protection is in place, minimising the risk of damage to both the lift and the property.
"The signage was intended solely as a reminder for delivery riders, movers and contractors to use the designated lifts. There was no intention to be discriminatory or to impose unnecessary restrictions.
"We acknowledge that the original signage included fines, which was an error. The signage has since been amended to remove any mention of fines."
