Netizens slam 'convoy' of PMA riders at Jalan Kayu
A 'convoy' of personal mobility aid (PMA) riders was spotted at Jalan Kayu near Abundant Grace Presbyterian Church.
Stomper Michael alerted Stomp to a video of the incident posted on Singapore Road Accident's Facebook page.
In the video, three PMAs are seen riding in a single file along a pavement.
One of the PMAs has two people on it.
The caption cheekily reads: "Cyclist[s] and pedestrian[s] please give way."
Facebook users criticised the size of the PMAs and also questioned whether the riders were able-bodied.
Under the Active Mobility Act, a PMA, such as a mobility scooter or a motorised wheelchair, must have only one seat and must be designed to carry only one individual who is unable to walk or has difficulties walking.
Devices with multiple seats are not considered mobility scooters.
In March, the Ministry of Transport accepted the recommendations of the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) on regulations concerning the use of PMA.
There have been rising concerns that able-bodied people have been misusing PMAs, particularly mobility scooters. These include concerns over dangerous riding, speeding and overly large PMAs.
Among the recommendations, which are planned to be implemented next year, is "to allow only users certified with relevant medical needs or walking difficulties to use mobility scooters, to ensure continued and sufficient access to public spaces for these users".
The speed limit of all PMAs will also be reduced to 6kmh, the typical walking speed.
The new rules will come into effect around 2025.
