Miss Grand S'pore's national costume inspired by Siamese fighting fish: 'She should've come out as Merlion'

The national costume of Miss Grand Singapore 2025 had some people scratching their heads.

The design worn by Miss Rose Pang who represented the Republic at the Miss Grand International Final in Bangkok on Oct 18 was inspired by the Siamese fighting fish.

But it might not have turned out as hoped.

A TikToker user commented: "They could have literally done such a crazy beautiful outfit with betta fish as the inspo. How did they turn it into looking like a goldfish?"

This in turn raised another question.

"Since when were goldfish ever associated with Singapore's culture," asked a netizen.

Somebody else commented: "Could literally pick MANY inspirations. This is why we need to tap on SG actual roots."

Commenters suggested alternative ideas. One wrote: "You should wear HDB flats or Gardens By The Bay trees. Aiyoh."

Another said: "Gosh, totally sad to see Miss Grand Singapore's costume! The costume design is not appropriate, and no Merlion, no Marina Bay Sands."

The Merlion was mentioned quite a number of times:

  • "Put a Merlion behind. Then some water splashng la."
  • "Can we give suggestions for next year's costume? I'll start - the Merlion at Changi Airport."
  • "Forgive me... omg Singapore can't make it. I know she is graceful and elegant, but it's the costume. Never show any symbol of Merlion laa... So sad to see this."
  • "She should have come out as a Merlion."
  • "Merlion also don't have? What lah? Looks like goldfish the colour."

So why choose a fish named after another country to represent Singapore in the first place?

A write-up explained: "From the island nation of Singapore comes a breath-taking creation inspired by the majestic betta fish, also known as the Siamese fighting fish - celebrated for its vibrant colors, flowing fins, and indomitable spirit.

"Just like the betta, Singapore may be small in size, yet it radiates strength, resilience, and grace.

"This exquisite costume features pleated panels that ripple like water in motion, while two golden dettas embrace the bodice, symbolising harmony, perseverance, and balance. Fin-like sleeves and a regal headpiece capture the fluid elegance of the underwater world, bringing to life the beauty of nature fused with cultural pride."

The tagline was "The Grace of the Waters, the Fighting Spirit of Singapore!"

One netizen opined: "I get it, but the execution wasn't there."

The winners of the national costume competition were Miss Grand Brazil, Miss Grand India and Miss Grand Thailand.
