A man did not hold back when sharing his thoughts on the conditions of Geylang East Market & Food Centre and its surroundings on May 3.

Stomper Ben recently left his lunch appointment at the hawker centre feeling disappointed and upset.

"I'm very much appalled by not only the sub-standard hygiene levels and bird faeces in the hawker centre, but also by the inconsiderate behaviour of hawkers there," he said.

"Even during busy lunch hours, the stallholders remain oblivious to the needs of waiting customers and insist on hogging the tables for their own personal use.

"This is very anti-social behaviour."

However, Ben's woes continued as he walked along Pipit Road to take a bus to his next destination.

He remarked: "I noticed unattended, uncleared bee hives and red army ant nests that are quickly enveloping the entire estate."

Ben further expressed his gripes, adding: "I have never experienced such a dirty neighbourhood in our country quite like this before."

"I feel sad that after moving out of Marine Parade in 1997 to live in Hougang Avenue 2, the contrast between both towns have become more pronounced and telling, with Hougang becoming more developed while Marine Parade slowly deteriorates into a slum-like condition."

Following a Stomp query, a spokesperson from Marine Parade Town Council provided the following statement:

"The town council is aware of the ant nest issue as shown in the photo raised by the resident, and promptly engaged our pest control contractor to inspect and treat the affected area on May 5.

"To date, we have not received further reports of similar pest-related issues within the MacPherson estate. Nonetheless, we remain vigilant and will continue to monitor the estate for any signs of ant nests or beehives.

"Residents are encouraged to contact our town council directly should they have any estate-related queries. Residents may reach out to us at 1800-241 6487 or 1800-287 6530, or via our Facebook and Instagram."
