Man uses long pole to disturb nests in Tampines, tells Stomper he was 'scared' by flying bird
A resident was shocked to witness a man in her Tampines neighbourhood trying to disturb bird nests on a tree outside her home.
Stomper Kalai shared with Stomp that the incident happened on April 2 near Block 491B Tampines Avenue 9.
She also shared a video of the man standing beneath the tree with a long pole made up of several long sticks.
"He came fully prepared with all the equipment to destroy nests," Ms Kalai said. "I don't know how many he destroyed before this."
She said she confronted the man after realising he was not retrieving a personal item, but actively targeting bird nests -- some of which might have contained eggs or hatchlings.
"There were about 15 birds, including crows, pigeons and mynahs, flying around and making a ruckus the moment he came," she said
"At first, I thought maybe his keys were stuck on the tree or something, but then I saw him attacking the nests,"
When she asked him to stop, the man allegedly shouted verbal abuse at her.
"He said a bird flew behind him and scared him, so he was attacking their home," said the Stomper. "But isn't that what birds do? They fly.
"People like this can't even show basic respect to other living beings."
Ms Kalai said she called the police, but when the man overheard her describing him on the phone, he quickly dismantled his makeshift tools and left the area.
"I just want to raise awareness because he lives in the area, and I don't know how many more nests he might try to destroy."
