Man tries to deposit $10,000 note at Clementi bank, counter staff gets suspicious

A 22-year-old man is expected to be charged on Sept 4 for his suspected involvement in delivering a counterfeit Singapore $10,000 note.

On Aug 15 at about 2pm, he was at a bank located along Clementi Avenue 3 when he allegedly presented the note to the bank counter staff and requested the note be deposited into a bank account.

Upon receiving the note, the staff member suspected that it was counterfeit and promptly informed the manager.

The police were alerted and arrested the man. The note was seized for investigations.

The man will be charged in court with using counterfeit currency notes as genuine, which is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 20 years and a fine.

The police reminded members of the public to be cautious of individuals offering money in
exchange for assistance to convert counterfeit $10,000 or other large denomination currency notes with genuine currency of smaller denominations or for depositing such notes at banks or other financial institutions.

If you have received any suspected counterfeit notes, you should:

  • Call the police at 999 immediately.
  • Note down the description of the person(s) who presented the counterfeit note,
    including gender, race, age, height, built, clothing and language/dialect spoken.
  • Note the description of the vehicle used, if any, including its registration number; and
  • Limit the handling of the suspected counterfeit note and place it in a protective covering, such as an envelope or folded paper, to prevent further tampering and hand it over to the Police immediately.
