Man says lights on 24/7 at MRT construction site is 'waste of electricity', LTA explains it's for safety
The constant usage of lights at an MRT construction site has sparked concern in one environmentally conscious man.
Stomper Anonymous noted that lights are turned on 24/7 at a construction site at the upcoming Cantonment MRT station next to 108 Spottiswoode Park Road.
"I noticed these lights have been on 24 hours daily for many months," Anonymous told Stomp on June 8.
"Of course, at night it is for safety. Do the workers really need lighting even during the day?
"Why would the lights be on for safety purposes during the day in bright sunlight?"
The Stomper shared photos of the lights on in the day and at night, pointing out that there was nobody working at times.
He added: "Lights are on even on weekends and public holidays, when no one is working at all.
"Isn't this a waste of electricity daily? And is this even green for the environment?"
In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) explained: "The works along Spottiswoode Park Road are for the construction of the upcoming Cantonment station entrance on the Circle Line 6 (CCL6).
"These works are targeted to be completed by the end of 2025.
"Due to the worksite's proximity to the currently closed blocked car park, additional lighting is required to ensure the safety of workers.
"These lights are activated during periods of low visibility, especially on overcast days to maintain safe working conditions.
"To minimise environmental impact, we have installed energy-efficient LED lights equipped with timers that operate from 6.30pm to 6.30am.
"LTA and the contractor are monitoring the works closely and will adjust the timing of the lights accordingly.
"We thank residents and stakeholders for their patience and understanding as we work to enhance transport connectivity and improve public transport journeys."
