A man felt uneasy after paying $6 for a packet of economy rice at Compass One as he was charged for seafood – even though he did not order any seafood.

Stomper Ivan had visited Rice Garden at the Sengkang shopping mall on May 16, at around 3.54pm.

Rice Garden is an economy rice stall brand by NTUC Foodfare that offers budget meals.

Ivan had ordered white rice with stir-fried cabbage and two pork dishes, but was surprised at the cost breakdown on his receipt.

The Stomper was particularly baffled to be charged $2.50 for "seafood with vegetable".

He said: "Do you see any seafood in this rice?

"I only realised it was so expensive and checked the receipt after reaching home, so I did not get to ask the stall."

Ivan told Stomp that it was his third time visiting the stall, but the latest incident left him feeling "not comfortable".

He added: "I seldom buy cai fan at malls and know that it is more expensive than buying at a hawker stall, but the main point is staff should not anyhow charge customers.

"The reason I am sharing this is to remind all customers that they must keep their receipts for reference."

Ivan might not have been wrongly charged, however.

According to a photo of his meal, one of the meat dishes he ordered appears to be braised pork belly – which tends to be pricier than regular meat dishes, as Stomp found out through a separate incident in November 2022.
