Man caught by supermarket staff allegedly scanning and voiding grocery items at self-checkout counter

A 46-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases, said police in a July 16 news release.

Police received a call for assistance from a supermarket along Woodlands Street 82 for a case of suspected shop theft on March 21.

A Giant Supermarket is located at the address.

The man was detained by supermarket staff for allegedly scanning and voiding grocery items worth over $34 at a self-checkout counter. 

Preliminary investigations revealed that he had purportedly scanned another barcode to make the final payment $0.60.

Subsequent investigations revealed that between Jan 2 and March 21, the man had allegedly made 26 similar transactions at the supermarket, and voided the items he had scanned at the self-checkout kiosk before leaving the store with them. 

The total value of the items voided by the man amounted to over $500.

He will be charged in court on July 17 for cheating.

The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
