A 28-year-old man has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

The police said they received a report on May 31 from a jewellery shop owner who was contacted by a man expressing interest in purchasing a gold necklace.

The man sent what appeared to be a screenshot of a successful payment, prompting the jeweller to dispatch the necklace to him via courier.

However, the victim later realised the payment had not gone through when he checked his company's bank account.

Investigations revealed that the man is also believed to be involved in several e-commerce scams where victims had made payments amounting to more than $11,600 for items listed on Carousell.

None of them received the items after payments were made.

The man was identified and arrested by police officers on June 3.

He will be charged in court on June 5 with cheating. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in jail and a fine.

The police said they take a serious stance against any person who may be involved in scams and fraudulent activities and offenders will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to be vigilant when making online purchases and to always verify payment transactions before handing over any items. Business owners should also ensure that payments have been successfully credited into their bank accounts before releasing their goods.
