Man, 67, nabbed for allegedly snatching handbag with over $1k of valuables from woman, 73, in Toa Payoh
A 67-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a snatch theft case.
The police were alerted to the case at Toa Payoh Central on May 28 at about 8.20pm, where an unknown man had allegedly attempted to snatch a handbag from a 73-year-old female victim.
The victim shouted for assistance and the man fled.
The handbag contained cash, a mobile phone, and bank cards with a total value of more than $1,000.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV and police cameras, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him within five hours of the report.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he is also believed to be involved in at least three other cases of theft.
The man will be charged in court on May 30 with the offence of snatch theft, which carries an imprisonment term of one to seven years, and will also be liable to caning.
The police said they "do not tolerate such brazen acts of crime."
They advised members of the public who encounter such cases to remain calm, take note of the physical appearance and distinctive features of the perpetrators, and call the police immediately.
