A rare visitor was recently spotted at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, delighting nature lovers and bird enthusiasts.

The bird, identified as an Asian openbill stork, was seen at Bishan Park 1 last week.

Stomper KG Tan shared gorgeous photos taken by his friend Jessica Emmett, a resident living across from the park.

The majestic stork was seen feeding on a snail.

The Stomper emphasised the importance of keeping Singapore's parks clean to protect such wildlife.

"We are lucky to live just next to Bishan Park and to witness such beautiful migratory birds stopping by," the Stomper said.

Earlier this month, The Straits Times reported mass sightings of the bird in Singapore, from Tampines to Sungei Buloh.

The Asian openbill stork is typically found in rice fields in South-east Asia, migrating seasonally in search of food and suitable habitats.

It primarily feeds on snails, frogs, and other small aquatic creatures.

However, Mr Movin, a researcher at the National University of Singapore, said it is unusual for these storks to travel this far south, as they are far more likely to fly to the northern parts of the Malaysian peninsula.

An irregular migration of large numbers of birds typically happens when populations grow too large, food becomes suddenly scarce in their usual habitats, or when there is an abundance of food in areas they do not usually frequent.
