LTA clamps down on 86 vehicles with illegal modifications such as decorative lights

A total of 86 vehicles were caught for over 165 offences during enforcement operations by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

LTA said on Jan 3 that the operations, which were conducted across Singapore in the fortnight before, focused on non-compliant modifications such as tinted films, decorative lamps, non-standard number plates and modified exhausts.

"Our enforcement officers have been hard at work over the holiday season to keep our roads safe," LTA said in its Facebook post.

The authority also said it remains committed to enforce these violations as part of broader efforts to make the roads safer for everyone.

One of the photos accompanying LTA's post shows a black sedan covered in fairy lights. The car was among 50 vehicles caught for having illegal decorative lamps in December 2024.

Stomp had earlier reported about a car decked out in flashing rainbow lights along Scotts Road. Stomper Wolfman had spotted the car on Dec 24 and expressed safety concerns.

The car was part of a Christmas convoy and had been decorated by a group of enthusiasts in the local community.

A YouTube video shows the convoy "taking over Singapore streets" and the reactions from onlookers.

According to LTA's website, such decorative lights and lamps fall under prohibited modifications as they may "distract and disorient other road users".

Anyone - including workshops - who illegally modifies or uses such vehicles may be fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed up to three months. Repeat offenders face double the penalties.
