Left with no choice, woman moving out of Hougang penthouse as neighbours are too noisy
A condo resident is no longer able to tolerate the noise of her neighbours.
Stomper Tara lives in a penthouse unit at Hougang Green condominium, and was met by new neighbours in August 2024: a large family with young children.
However, Tara said the constant noise from their gatherings became too much to bear, which is worsened by their front door being left open.
"While I understand everyone has different lifestyles, and it's not my place to judge, it has significantly affected our living experience," Tara explained.
"A very simple thing they could do is just keep their front door shut, which would greatly reduce the noise for their neighbors, but they've refused to do so."
Sharing a video of the noise from her neighbour's unit on what she describes as a typical day, Tara said: "It will last until 9am to 10pm every day, combined with jumping noises as well.
"During large gatherings, the noise level is two to three times higher."
Although Tara tried to remain altruistic, she claims her neighbours were dismissive of her concerns, even suggesting that those who are not comfortable with their way of life should move elsewhere.
She also sought help from the condo management, and explained: "Management says there's nothing further they can do, as there are no clear guidelines in Singapore law defining what counts as noisy."
"The condo management did issue them a formal letter, but unfortunately, that almost made things worse. They've been even louder since, possibly out of defiance.
"They're quite tricky, they always close their door after 10:30pm, just in time to avoid any grounds for a police report."
Tara also claimed a security guard spoke to the family, but they insisted it was their right to keep the front door open.
As such, Tara has decided to move out and is currently looking for a new home.
"We chose to move into a condo, hoping for a better environment and quality of life compared to HDB living," she shared.
"But ironically, this neighbour has made it even worse than the worst-case scenario we imagined in an HDB flat, and there is nothing we can do."
Tara found their behaviour deeply inconsiderate, saying: "Even without strict rules, there should be some basic sense of courtesy and respect for neighbours.
"I'm sharing this to raise awareness of how powerless residents can be in situations like this, and to caution others who may be considering moving into Hougang Green, especially if quiet living is a priority."
