Jalan Besar coffee shop continues to offer free breakfast to students despite no takers for 5 months

In 2024, Yihe Eating House started offering free breakfasts to students.

However, over the past five months, no one has come.

The coffee shop is once again inviting students to pay them a visit for free breakfast.

A notice was posted at the coffee shop on Veerasamy Road which stated that from November 2024 onwards, it would provide free breakfast to the first 10 students in school uniforms from 6am to 11am every day.

The notice also reads: "We found that some students did not have enough money for breakfast, so we decided to give them a small gift. We hope that students will not go to school hungry."

The breakfast is limited to one serving per person on the same day.

When interviewed by Shin Min Daily News, Mr Zhang, the 40-year-old manager of the coffee shop, said that this was his business partner's idea, and the intention was to help students who were short of money.

"My business partner is very active in the neighbourhood, this is to help families in need," he said.

"The cost of living is high these days, so any small bit of help counts."

The traditional breakfast set offered by the coffee shop includes a hot drink, a slice of toast and two soft-boiled eggs with soy sauce. The set is priced at $4.40 on weekdays.

Mr Zhang admitted that despite the notice, no student had come to get the free breakfast.

"There will also be no students coming during the school holidays, but we will still warmly welcome them."

He also believes that more coffee shops should implement this discount for the greater good of society.

Recently, a Facebook post was made about the shop, with many netizens praising the coffee shop's move.
