Update on Aug 21:

Grab says system error causing sky-high fares an 'unwelcome surprise', has processed full refunds

Original article:

A temporary system issue led to unusually high fares - some in the thousands - being wrongly displayed on the Grab app on Aug 20, said the ride-hailing firm.

Several Stompers shared the sky-high prices shown on their app at around noon.

Stomper Miah was quoted $1,521 for a JustGrab ride from Yew Tee to Bendemeer. She likened the price to flying on a "Boeing 373 in business class".

Echoing similar sentiments, Stomper Kumantong said: "The fares are like taking a flight around the world."

Meanwhile, Stomper Ebo said he was quoted $1,008 for a ride from Ang Mo Kio to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Stomper Foo, whose Grab app displayed $1,525 for a trip from Pandan Valley to Changi Airport, asked: "Is this a cost of living issue or this is a Grab glitch? 😅"

In response to a Stomp query, a Grab spokesperson said: "We encountered a temporary system issue that led to abnormally high prices being wrongly displayed in our app.

"The issue has been resolved, and the app is now functioning as usual. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused."

Stomp understands that the issue lasted 17 minutes.

However, Grab's system is designed such that bookings or orders with such unusually high fares would have been blocked, and not gone through.

Any such fares that went through during the system issue will be compensated for by Grab.
