Grab suspends driver who used phone while driving, gives passenger apology and refund
Ride-hailing firm Grab has suspended a driver who was caught on video using his mobile phone while at the wheel.
A video of the Dec 5 incident was posted on Facebook with the caption: "Irresponsible Grab driver, continuously texting with both hands! And this is just a short part when I was able to record."
The passenger who recorded the video also alleged: "Grab sent only a copy-paste generic pacifying letter... When I said I'm not happy with that, they just lazily sent the same letter again. Grab doesn't care."
In the video, the driver can be seen switching the phone between both his hands while trying to type on the screen, where the keypad is visible.
At one point, he had both hands on his phone.
In response to a Stomp query, a Grab spokesperson said on Dec 10: "At Grab, ensuring the safety of our passengers is of the utmost priority.
"The driver-partner captured on video has violated our code of conduct and we have since proceeded to suspend the driver-partner. We have also reached out to the passenger to apologise for the experience and refunded the booking.
"We would like to remind all driver-partners that using a mobile phone while driving, including texting or holding the device, is strictly prohibited under the Road Traffic Act in Singapore. This serious offence not only violates traffic laws but also endangers lives."
"All interactions with mobile devices should only be done using hands-free modes and when the vehicle is safely stationary."
Driver-partners found to have violated Grab's code of conduct or traffic laws may be permanently banned on its platform, the spokesperson added.
Under the Road Traffic Act, offenders caught using their phones while driving are liable to a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail.
